Our Thoughts
Many people believe that the Dark Ages were all dark and somewhat dreary. We think differently. We have concluded that even though the Dark Ages have a bad reputation, they were not all that horrible. So much progress was made in that time period. Many of the things we use or say today originated in the medieval times, and here are just a few of them:
Many people believed that gargoyles were placed on churches to ward off evil; however, gargoyles were a system of drains. They got their name “gargoyle” from the gurgling sound the water made when it went through them.
Have you ever heard the saying, "Don't throw the baby out with the bath water?" This saying may have come from the bathing methods in medieval times. Baths consisted of a big tub filled with hot water. The man of the house had the privilege of the nice clean water, then all the other sons and men, then the women, and finally the children, and last of all the babies. By the time they washed the babies, the water was so filthy, you could actually lose someone in it!
Next time you put some coins in your piggy bank you can think of the middle ages. The Middle English term "pygg" referred to a type of clay. In the middle ages, people would often keep coins in jars or pots made of pygg that they would call "pygg jars." By the 18th century, with the evolution of language, these came to be known as "piggy banks."
