Charlemagne was born in 742 A.D. He made many accomplishments. Charlemagne ruled most of western Europe for 16 years. In the year of 768 A.D. he became King of the Franks. He had many skilled military strategies and engaged in warfare to accomplish his goals. Using his leadership skills and abilities he and his faithful army conquered most of the other barbarian tribes. With this, Charlemagne now ruled over what is now known as Belgium, France, Luxembourg, Netherlands, and western Germany. In 800 A.D. Pope Leo named Charlemagne Emperor of Romans. Charlemagne’s people loved him dearly. Charlemagne was a very impressive king. He was very caring and knew everyone in his castle by name, regardless of their class. He was said to be over six feet tall with blonde hair. He often wore a blue cape over his fur coat which made Charlemagne look even bigger. He loved his dogs greatly and they were always at his heels. Charlemagne was so well respected that his people began to call him Charles the Great. He was king of the Franks till his last year of life. Charlemagne died of natural causes in 814 A.D. Charlemagne’s last act of chivalry was to leave larger portions of his wealth to the churches. He also ensured the survival of Christianity in the west of Europe. When he died he left a huge impact on Europe. Charlemagne is now often referred to as the “Father of Europe.”
