Gothic Cathedrals
Gothic Cathedrals were really well designed and a wonderful part of history. People started building Gothic cathedrals in 1144. They were mainly built out of limestone. Some Gothic cathedrals (in northern and eastern France) used this hard, sticky material to keep the bricks stuck together. The three basic elements of the Gothic cathedrals are the pointed arches, flying buttresses, and the ribbed vault. The Gothic architect wanted the people who would see it to be in “awe." One of the most beautiful of all Gothic cathedrals is called Chartres Cathedral. It is located in Chartres by Paris, France.
